Dr. Mark Drakos is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in disorders of the foot and ankle as well as sports medicine injuries of the shoulder and knee. He grew up on Long Island. He did his undergraduate work in biomedical engineering at Harvard University where he was also a four year letter winner and wide receiver for the varsity football team. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he was elected a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society signifying graduation within the top 15% of his class. Dr. Drakos completed his orthopaedic training at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York which was recently named the #1 hospital in the United States for orthopaedics by U.S. News and World Report. Here he received several grants for his research as well as the Jean McDaniel Award for the chief resident who best exemplifies professional skill, dedication to the ethics of medicine and commitment to resident education. He also received the Lewis Clark Wagner Award for excellence in orthopaedic surgery research. Following residency he did a sports medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery where he was an assistant team physician for the New York Giants. He followed that with a second fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Brown University, one of the busiest trauma centers in the Northeast. Dr. Drakos is the author of over 50 peer review articles, book chapters and presentations involving orthopaedics. Dr. Drakos has directly provided care for a number of high school, collegiate, professional, and Olympic athletes. His research has been presented at regional, national and international meetings. His work on the effect of the shoe surface interface on injuries received a regional Orthopaedics Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Award and national media recognition. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). Dr. Drakos’ goal is to provide patients with the best medical care possible using all the latest techniques and current research available.
